Extremophiles9th International Society for the Study of the Origins of Life Meeting7/12/1999 The meeting was held at UC San Diego the week of 7/12-7/16 (1999). This campus has a strong origin of life presence. Some of the workers in the field who are affiliated with UCSD are: Stanley Miller; Leslie Orgel; Gerald Joyce; Reza Ghadiri; Russell Doolittle; Jeffery Bada and Gustaf Arrhenius. Biochemical Synonyms Optimized, Part 2 of 28/28/2008 New Study Uncovers More Evidence for Biochemical Optimization and Intelligent Design Blind Faith Fuels Origin-of-life Quest: A Report on ISSOL '997/1/1999 The biological community’s mindlock on a natural-process origin of life seems to hold, but its irrationality becomes increasingly obvious with time. Hugh Ross and I made this observation as we spent time recently among some of the most distinguished scholars in the origin-of-life ranks at the combined 12th International Conference on the Origin of Life and the 9th ISSOL (International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life) meeting at the University of California, San Diego. Exotic Life Sites: The Feasibility of Far-Out Habitats10/1/2001 People often joke about the certainty of death and taxes. Astronomers can add another certainty to that short list: Sooner or later someone will ask, “What do you think about the possibility of life out there?” Follow the Water...to Life?1/1/2004 Astrobiology, the search for life beyond Earth, is the fastest growing scientific discipline, at least in terms of increased government funding. However, despite a quadrupling of funds in just six years (compared to a vastly smaller increase for all the other sciences) and despite decades of diligent searching, no one has found any evidence for life beyond planet Earth. Life Zones in Space10/1/1999 Life is hardy, but it needs some basics—conditions which can only be found in systems of planets orbiting stars. No wonder these systems hold such fascination for scientists, for everyone! In October 1999, Science focused an entire edition on planetary systems. No, No, Nanobacteria6/12/2008 Common wisdom would say that someone who is less than six feet tall would never make it as a professional basketball player. Size matters in the NBA. Size also matters to biochemists. Sea Vents Closed as Life-Origin Site4/1/2002 A mile and a half down, beyond the reach of sunlight, volcanic geysers spew 400°C water into the oceans. Life teems around these deep, hidden vents—pink sea cucumbers, eyeless shrimp, tubeworms, and more—creating underwater communities. Some Like It Hot—But First Life Did Not4/1/2002 Cedric and Winnie have finally saved enough money to buy a house. They dream about owning a Victorian cottage in a serene older neighborhood. They hope to find their home near Winnie’s workplace and in a community with outstanding schools for their two young children. Too Hot To Handle10/18/2007 Genetic Code Indicates that Life Did Not Originate at High Temperatures Water on Mars Too Salty for Life7/3/2008 I always know when our water purification system isn’t working right. All it takes is a gulp of water from the kitchen tap. The intense salty taste followed by spewed water in the sink is a telltale ExtremophilesEarly Earth Marred by Acid RainAuthor: Dr. Hugh Ross and Dr. Fazale ("Fuz") Rana Goldmine Bug DNA May Be Key to Alien LifeAuthor: Dr. Fazale ("Fuz") Rana Microbes in Antarctic IceFuz Rana, Jeff Zweerink, and Joe Aguirre Nanobacteria not AliveAuthor: Dave Rogstad, Fuz Rana, and Joe Aguirre The Best of Science News FlashHugh Ross, Fuz Rana, Jeff Zweerink, and Joe Aguirre Extremophiles |
